It was the already familiar story of McArthur Wheeler — the robber who rubbed his face with lemon juice, sincerely believing that surveillance cameras would not film him.
Dunning and Kruger did not laugh at this case, as most people would have done. Instead, they asked themselves a fundamental scientific question, which sounded like this:
“If this person is so stupid that he does not understand elementary things, then how is he even capable of assessing his own stupidity? How did he decide that his plan was good? What happens in the head of a person who does not know obvious things, but at the same time is absolutely convinced of the opposite?”
It was then that they formulated a hypothesis that later turned psychology upside down: the skills necessary to perform a task correctly are the very same skills needed to understand that the task has been performed badly.
It sounds complicated, but the essence is simple. To realize that you are a bad chess player, you need to understand chess at least a little. But not abstractly, very specifically: they had to predict how many correct answers they had given (as a percentage) and what place they occupied among all the other participants in the experiment.

They solved the tasks, saw nuances, noticed that some tasks were tricky, and thought: “If this was difficult for me, then it must surely be difficult for others too. So I probably did about average.” They projected their own difficulty onto others. They did not understand that for the others these tasks were not simply difficult, but unsolvable. Let’s take the word apart piece by piece. The prefix “meta-” translated from Greek means “above,” “higher,” “about itself.” And “cognition” is everything connected with knowing: thinking, memory, attention, understanding, decision-making. Therefore, metacognition is thinking about one’s own thinking. It is the ability of your brain to rise one floor higher and look at itself from above. It is the inner observer who sits in your head and comments: “So, right now I am thinking about this task. But am I solving it correctly? Have I forgotten something? Do I really understand this?”
Metacognition is your personal built-in radar that scans the quality of your own thoughts. It is the difference between simply thinking and thinking about how you think.
I will give an example from life so that it becomes completely clear. Imagine that you are learning a foreign language. You have learned 50 new words and feel like a good fellow. Let’s imagine another situation. You have never seen or baked bread in your life. You went into the kitchen, mixed flour, water, salt, and yeast “by eye,” put it into the oven, and took out a burnt brick that was raw inside. But! You do not know what a real, ideal baguette should look like. You do not know what kind of crust it should have, what kind of crumb, what kind of aroma. You look at your brick and think: “Well, bread is bread. Hard, but edible. I probably did not do badly.” And next to you stands a professional baker who has been baking crispy croissants for 20 years. He takes your “bread” and simply falls silent from horror. But you do not see this horror. You do not know the standard, you have never tasted real bread, and therefore your internal standard of quality is catastrophically lowered.
This is that very “blindness to one’s own blindness.” A beginner does not simply not know how to do something correctly. He does not know how it should be correctly. That is exactly why it is so difficult to argue with a person who is sure that he has understood a topic after reading one article on the internet. He does not have the volume of knowledge that would allow him to see all the nuances, all the “underwater stones,” all the exceptions to the rules. Why Experts Underestimate Themselves
And now let’s turn the medal over. We have dealt with those who overestimate themselves. But the second part of the Dunning-Kruger effect is about those who underestimate themselves. Why do the smartest and most competent people often doubt themselves, sit quietly in the corner, and feel embarrassed to express their opinion?
Here the exact same mechanism of metacognition works, but in the exact opposite way. In an expert, the radar works too well, and he sees not only his competence, but also its boundaries. And this immediately gives rise to three powerful effects that make geniuses doubt themselves.
Effect one: “The curse of knowledge.”
This is a psychological phenomenon that sounds beautiful and tragic at the same time. Its essence is that the more you know, the harder it is for you to imagine that other people do not know this.
Imagine that you are a professional pianist. You have played since the age of five, you have perfect pitch, you know where every note is on the keyboard without even looking. For you, taking a C major chord is as natural as breathing. You look at a beginner who is trying to press three keys at the same time and think: “Well, is this really difficult? It is elementary!” You forget that 30 years ago you also could not do this. You project your knowledge onto others. And when you solve a difficult professional task, you think: “I solved it. So it was easy. So anyone else would have solved it too. So I am not so brilliant after all.”
You do not see your own exceptionality because your internal standard of “normal” is yourself. You forget that what is “normal” for you is “the highest level of skill” for another person. That is exactly why many professors are terrible lecturers. They speak in complex terms, make quick logical jumps, and are sincerely surprised when students understand nothing. They cannot get into the beginner’s head and remember what it is like not to know.
Effect two: they overestimate the competence of those around them.
An expert has a clear picture of the world. He sees how many shades, nuances, and complex interconnections exist in his field. And he sincerely believes that if he knows these nuances, then most people around him know them too. He thinks: “Well, this is obvious. All normal people should understand this.”
And when he looks at his achievements, he compares them not with the real level of the average person, but with that high ideal level that exists in his head. And compared with this ideal level, his own knowledge seems modest to him. “I know that there are still thousands of articles I have not read. There are dozens of theories I have not fully mastered. To write a good text, you need to feel the language, know grammar, understand the logic of narration. But exactly those same skills — a feel for language, knowledge of grammar, understanding of logic — are needed for you to read your own text and understand: “But it is terrible. The grammar limps, the logic jumps, the style is clumsy.”
If you do not have these skills, you will write a bad text and will not notice it. You will sincerely consider it a masterpiece. If you have these skills, you will write a good text, but you will notice that it is not ideal (because your taste is already more refined), and you will consider it mediocre.
Here it is, the main irony: to see your incompetence, you already need to be competent enough. And if you are incompetent, you cannot see your incompetence, because you do not have the tools for it. It is like trying to repair a watch without having a screwdriver. And you do not even know that a screwdriver is needed. That is exactly why the Dunning-Kruger effect is so difficult to defeat “from the inside.”

You look at your previous achievements (which seemed genius to you) and understand that they were funny and pitiful. You feel shame, disappointment, anger at yourself. It seems to you that you will never learn, that you are “not made for this,” that everyone around you is smarter and more talented.
Here is what you think at this stage:
- “I am a complete idiot. How could I think that I understood anything?”
- “Everyone succeeds, but I do not. I am hopeless.”
- “I will never be able to learn this. It is too difficult for me.”

And real scientists, who studied viruses for decades, spoke carefully, with reservations, with references to research — and their voices drowned in the chorus of couch experts.
How not to become a victim of this in politics? First, honestly admit to yourself that you do not understand most complex issues. Second, stop getting information from one source. Third, learn to ask yourself the question: “Where do I know this from? How can I check this information? And what do experts in this field say?”
In Medicine and Education
These two spheres — medicine and education — are especially sensitive to the Dunning-Kruger effect because people’s health and future are at stake here. And here, paradoxically, both beginners and those who should be the support of the system can suffer.
Medicine: interns and amateur patients.
- Problem number one: young doctors. Imagine an intern who has just graduated from medical university. He knows the theory, he passed the exams, he feels like a real doctor. He encounters a patient with strange symptoms, and the intern instantly makes a diagnosis. He is sure that this is a rare disease that he learned from a textbook. He does not pay attention to details, does not conduct differential diagnosis, does not order additional tests, because he is 100% sure. - Pay attention to marker words: “always,” “never,” “obvious,” “every fool knows” — this often says that a person does not know alternative points of view.
- If you catch yourself giving confident advice in an area where you are not a professional, freeze for a second. Ask: “Do I really understand this? Or do I just want to seem smart?”
And the last, most important thing to take away from this chapter: the Dunning-Kruger effect is not about “others.” It is about us.
